About Us

Seidokan Aikido of South Carolina was founded by Doug Wedell in 1989 after he moved from Illnois to teach at the University of South Carolina. Originally, the dojo was located in USC’s Blatt gym and was opened to both the USC population and the general public. In 2000, Blatt was closed to the general public and the dojo split into an on campus Aikido Club and an off-campus location. Seidokan Aikido of SC’s primary mission is to spread the gentle art of Aikido through out South Carolina. Our dojo primary holds regular training classes however we also provide around four seminars annually, special classes and socials in order to strengthen our dojo community.

Our Columbia dojo has moved to the Balance Insitute on 1905 Sunset Blvd, West Columbia 29169. Our regular classes are held Tuesday and Thrusday from 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm and Saturday 9:00 am to 11:00 am. The first hour on Tuesday and Thursday is open to adults and children over 8. We encourage parents to join their child on the mat.

Our on campus Aikido Club meets at the Strom Thrumond Fitness and Wellness center in the Martial Arts Room behind the rock wall  Wednesday, Friday and Sunday from 5 pm to 7pm. The physical address for the building is 1000 Blossom Street Columbia SC 29201. Visitors are advised to park in Coliseum parking across the street.
